Sum q conducts wind tunnel testing; providing rapid turnaround as needed.  Wind tunnel testing is an excellent way to characterize the thermal performance of a heat sink, electronic assembly or other powered assembly.  Doing so, especially during early development, can save time and money by exposing the major thermal factors that may influence design.

Sum q's wind tunnel can accommodate test articles up to 4" x 10" x 10" (H x W x L).  In the case of heat sink characterization, pressure drop and temperature data is collected as a function of air velocity.  Thermal resistance, often referred to as R-theta, can be determined from the temperature data.  For PCB, the temperatures of critical components are measured as a function of air velocity.  For large assemblies, we can contract on your behalf or recommend facilities with larger wind tunnels.

While conceptually simple, achieving effective and reliable thermal interfaces, in particular between electronic components and heat dissipation devices, can prove challenging in practice.  The choices between thermal greases and adhesives, films and phase-change materials depend greatly on the application and the ability to achieve consistency in production.  We know the range of available solutions and can assist you in making an appropriate choice for your application.

Whether a start-up in the early concept stage or a mature firm introducing a product into production, Sum q provides the mechanical engineering expertise needed for a successful project.  We provide basic design services from concept through documenting the design in SolidWorks 3D models and drawings.

In addition, we offer a range of analytical tools and expertise, including in the application of high performance plastics.  In some applications, high performance plastics, such as PEEK, provide a better cost to benefit than metal.
